According to the Dayton Daily News, from 10 am to 7 pm on Saturday, the 29th annual Country Applefest will happen in Warren County. The event is said to attract about 40,000 people for the homemade food, items, and entertainment.
Applefest’s volunteer committee, known as the Apple Ladies, has dedicated their time because they love the festival and the city. “Most of us grew up here, and graduated from Lebanon High School and remained in the community,” said Kathy Stine, who’s served on the committee since 1988.
At Applefest, as a requirement to be in the festival, everything is homemade, and because they are “mom and pop-type vendors, they’re not going to have the commercial backup to supply the huge amount of people, so they will sell out,” festival committee chairwoman Jiffy Stiles explains.
Committee member Rita Jackson describes the annual festival as “classy,” mostly because about 90% of the proceeds go back to the community. “All the money we make, every bit (beyond festival expenses) is donated to charities.”
The biggest recipient is the Lebanon Food Pantry, which received about $3,000 last year. In addition, they buy Christmas gifts for Country Manor Nursing Home residents without families, which last year included about 40 recipients. “We do a lot of good and these crazy women are wonderful,” said committee member Cindy Fugate.
