According to WSAZ Ohio News, the Athens fire department needs a ladder truck to send on fire calls to buildings four stories tall or higher. While struggling for the funds, Ohio University stepped in to help protect the community. They chipped in $250,000 for the new vehicle.
The Associated Press reports Athens City Councilwoman Christine Fahl said 85% of buildings in the city that require a ladder during a fire are on the OU campus. Council President Bill Bias said during a meeting on Tuesday, University President Roderick McDavis sent a letter saying the school would pay $50,000 in each of the next five years.
Athens bought the truck in May at just over $1 million, and asked the University for help pay for it. The City of Athens wanted to buy a new ladder truck for the fire department, but with the price tag being more than a million dollars, the city couldn’t afford it.
Therefore, Council Member Sherry Coon says OU will be asked to pay $250,000 in $50,000 payments for five years. A resolution urging the contribution from OU was passed unanimously on Monday night by Athens City Council.
